Summer Educational Science Programs

Biogen Idec Summer Lab Sessions 2008
What & Who: Summer Lab sessions for high school students. Conduct hands-on lab project, meet and interact with scientist and other biotech professionals, tour labs and get an inside view of a biotech company!

Where: Community Lab at Biogen Idec in Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA

Cost: Free! Lunch is provided every day. Transportation and parking costs are not covered.

Requirements: Students must have completed 9th grade by this summer and 10th grade for the advanced session. This class is intended for students who are enthusiastic and curious about biotechnology! Students should be familiar with DNA, its structure and function and have some knowledge of proteins. Registration: Registration opens to any high school student on April 21st. Space is limited and is on a first-come basis.

The Program for Research and Investigation in Science and Math
The Program for Research and Investigation in Science and Math (PRISM) provides 3 weeks of enjoyable summer academics and activities at the Harvard Medical School for rising 9th grade students. The program is designed to ease the transition from middle to high school and to help students build a solid foundation in their math and science skills. PRISM promotes critical, analytical, and independent thinking skills through classroom, laboratory, computer and field trip activities. PRISM also promotes overall literacy skills through case-based learning. Students learn basic scientific and mathematical principles in the context of medical physiology and disease processes. They also learn how math and science together explain natural phenomena.

What is Biotechnology? - This is playable multimedia presentation link on the front page of BIOCOM's Online Workforce Center website that explores biotechnology, its applications, and how one can become a part of the biotechnology field. The presentation also introduces the viewer to BIOCOM's online Education and Training center. There are five different sections to click on and a short video/slideshow will play. Demand Driven Biotechnology Training Video
This is an 11-minute video on the subject of Demand Driven Biotechnology Training. This video features short interviews with representatives of the Centers of Expertise within the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce. It also features an interview with a Biotechnology workforce provider and a biotechnology student who is retraining having been a displaced worker. The video epitomizes the concept of Demand Driven Training in Biotechnology.
